While I liked this story, I also found it a little underwhelming. I may have had too high of expectation since I love this author. There wasn't anything bad about this book It just didn't blow me away. The story line was good, the characters just ok and that narration was great. I still have hope the nest book in this series will be great.

So, this is good. The hospital stuff is just detailed enough, for me. It was cool to learn a little about Taiwan culture (a reviewer who is also first gen Taiwanese US citizen was very pleased), And, I really liked Simon's eventual epiphany about his home town. I do know about little towns. :)

It is deliberately this type of hospital doctor/nurse romance and does it well. Simon is intentionally a soft-natured character. Nursing is a tough job, he's got strength. He just doesn't show it the same way Hong-Wei does.

I even liked the epilogue!

This is quite different from the other series I've read by this author, and I think some reviewers weren't expecting it, even though it's right there in the description. Humans. What can you do?

The insta-love toward the end was a tad too strong to give this four stars but otherwise, it was a perfect lil’ cutesy hospital romance with lots of heart, heartache, and small town drama. Just the way I like them!

The Doctor’s Secret is the first book in the Copper Point medical series by Heidi Cullinan. Doctor Hong-Wei "Jack" Wu comes to Copper Point after a hard residency. He becomes their only general surgeon even though he is way overqualified for the position. There he meets Simon Lane, a surgical nurse who wanted nothing more than to return home after his schooling was finished. Sparks fly right away; the only problem is the hospital has just put in a strict no-dating policy.

Simon was so sweet. He went above and beyond for the patients even though his job was as a surgical nurse and not a regular nurse. Hong-Wei, even though he should have been a big shot, was very kind and caring and his character was very well written. I loved the multi-cultural characters and how Hong-Wei showed aspects of his own culture and shares it with everyone.

As someone who adores K-pop and Asian drama I was so excited about Simon’s love of it. I knew most of the groups/dramas he mentioned and it made me fangirl. He even brought up Jonghyun’s suicide, which hit our K-pop community very hard and it made me stop a minute. I appreciate the author honoring Jonghyun’s life.

I completely understand the idea of no dating in the workplace since the smallest fight can completely tip the atmosphere into a workplace no one wants to enter. However, I am also really happy they were able to get it overturned as Simon and Hong-Wei were a cute couple. I really liked the book; it combined some of my favorite things and I was pretty happy with the ending. I hope we see the guys some more in the next books.

I've been excited about reading this book since I pre-ordered it. I hadn't read it yet as I was worried about being disappointed, having high expectations, lol. I shouldn't have worried even for a second though as this was everything I hoped for.

I'll admit I enjoy a good doctor/nurse story. It just has a certain allure for me, although I don't really know why. And this definitely hit the high points for me. Heidi Cullinan is one of those authors who manage to write characters so life-like you feel you could meet them down the street (or in this case at Copper Point Hospital *grin*). Add to that an engaging storyline, no "created" drama, interesting side characters and, for me, it's a match made in heaven! I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

Dr “Jack” Hong-Wei Wu moves to Copper Point, Wisconsin to join the small-town hospital. After training at a prestigious high-stress hospital, he wants a quiet life and work as a general surgeon. The surgical nurse Simon Lane meets him at the airport and there is an instant attraction.

What I enjoyed most about this novel is that the angst was built on external factors (and not with their relationship). Heidi Cullinan did a good job of highlighting some of the cultural things with the Taiwanese doctor. Simon is born and bred in Copper Point, and his outlook was very different. But they seemed like a very good match.

I listened to the audiobook version, and Iggy Toma did an excellent job with the narration. I enjoyed the story so much that I immediately borrowed the next book in the series. I’m also going to check out Asian dramas on Netflix!

This novel includes

  • MM romance
  • Secret relationship
  • Bi-racial relationship
  • Office romance
  • A few open-door sex scenes
  • Well developed secondary characters
  • Excellent audiobook narration
