A bit confused, highly rated but this was not good. Prince storyline was garbage, obvious and juvenile. There's some nuggets here which could have been used to form a good story but didn't. Writing was average. A slog to finish.

Stopped on Chapter 17 (p.228).

I really wanted to like this book, but just never got into it.  It's really a shame, since this series is a prequel to two of my favorite fantasy series of all time (the Riyria Revelations and the Riyria Chronicles).

Maybe someday I will give this book another try, but it just isn't my thing right now.

Well written, engaging, with great characters. Can't wait to see where this series goes.

This is my tenth (?) Michael J. Sullivan book and I'm still so in love with this fantasy world he's created!

Michael J. Sullivan is becoming a must read author for me! I love the world set up in this first book (with some familiar names if you’ve read Riyeria), the introduction of some great characters, and an interesting larger plot building in the background. TGR continues to crush the narration of Sullivan’s work and I look forward to continuing with these characters!

I own this book, so I actually ended up putting it down in favor of library books that I had to return that were on wait lists. When I did get a chance to jump into the story, I could not put it down. The relationship between Royce & Hadrian is one of my favorite in all of fiction, so there was a pretty high bar set here. [a:Michael J. Sullivan|2063919|Michael J. Sullivan|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1433443335p2/2063919.jpg] did not disappoint.

In point of fact, this has been a difficult year for me. I had lost the joy in reading. This series has given it back to me. I've not enjoyed reading anything so thoroughly in months and I cannot be more grateful to have my favorite pastime back.

I put it down for too long. I will continue but I have to start again from the beginning of the series
