not sure if its weird to mark a book of the bible on here but it took some time with all its chapters and i learnt alot
i feel i have a great relationship with god but a not so good knowledge of the bible, i’ve never read it front to back so here we started with genesis
for me the main thing this book taught me was the importance of trusting in god, even when you dont want to, or its scary or unknown. as we read in here he continually follows through on his promises
Abraham who put his full faith in the lord to travel to somewhere he had never been, owned nothing and upend everything he knew, he very nearly sacrificed his own son (god put a stop to that) but it did serve as a great point to ask myself how trusting in the lord am i? and do i have a good fear of the lord? honestly need to work on that aha

Then theres Rebekah who does some more so shocking things but at the start when we meet her she has such a sweet kindess in tending to the camels and servant and as soon as she is asked leaves straight away to become a wife despite so much unknown and even her family slightly objecting
and Joseph… honestly that question of dead or alive who would you want to have dinner with- my answer will now be him. He is enduring of so much hatred, frankly gross bullying and taunting, holding patience through this and years later when it takes his brothers ages to recognise him again- i also loved that he cried so publicly and wasnt afraid to show his heart and express his emotions

beautiful book and i am glad i went back to it:)

had to read this for an assignment, the least I can get is some goodreads validation. p.s, God, babe, you need to work on your prose.

The one and only prequel. Little bit long winded. Wonder when the main character will show up.

But now for something serious:
Genesis is the most fascinating story in the entire bible. It contains a lot symbolism in my opinion: most of which I don't know or understand. Wish to learn more about it in the future.
Fascinating and not too long for a Bible text, so check it out sometime I'd say.

I won’t be “rating” the Bible because I would be too biased. I grew up strictly non-religious and I am an atheist. However, I started reading the Bible because it has been cited against me and my identity too many times and because it is a vital component of the Western world.
Genesis is truly just a man’s book where the only time women talked at all was to persuade men or deceit them (won’t be giving my thoughts on that). I was surprised to experience the great influence that Greek mythology has on the Bible for I obviously knew that is had an important role in Christianity but not the extent of it.
I guess this is a very interesting journey I am on of reading the Bible as an atheist queer woman of color.

And so, we've come to the end of the beginning of the Bible! :)

5 stars (of course ;D) for an engaging and educational read, and an even deeper insight into the book of the Beginning of it All.

All in all it wasn't too bad. It was crazy, unintentionally funny, and nice to hear the original story that I sort of knew. Sometimes there was information that seemed pointless that was detailed in the extreme and other times little information about an important point in the plot.

Parts that were good: The Joseph's story in Egypt (best story has the most detail and plot), Abraham and Sarah (they were half siblings and married, LOL), God decides all the boys needing to be circumcised (so like 13 year-olds and 90 year-olds get to be circumcised), Sarah/Hagar/Abraham (jealously, betrayal, and Hagar and her kid get kicked out of the family)

Parts that weren't so good: Adam in Eden (not enough detail), Cain kills Able (he didn't know what would happen also I blame god), Sodom and Gomorrah (woof! sending his two virgin daughters to the mob like woah!!!) God demanding Abraham sacrifice his son Isaac (woah?!)

Copy cat stories: Isaac's wife Rebecca gives birth to the twins Esau and Jacob. That felt like a copy cat kind of story with Cain and Abel.

Being a non christian and reading the bible for educational reasons I felt a lot of emotions through the various stories of the descandants of Adam and Eve. Some stories were excruciating ---- the story of Lot's daughters raping Lot in his sleep. Excluding the graphic content, I enjoyed the short stories, Jacob's love for Rachel and his sons from Rachel, Joseph interpreting the Pharoah's dream and other stories displaying love and affections.
