I loved this one but, my god, Aaliyah is so DENSE. Like don’t get me wrong she’s got so much going on at home so I don’t blame her for being distracted but my girl is so oblivious. Like wow 😭 Anyways, I would die for Trinity.

This book is very much a character-driven story, mostly about the ways that teenagers lives can get messy. And the fact that they make mistakes, and it's okay. It's not world ending. This is Turner's debut novel, but she's got a talent for writing authentic teenage voices. I will happily read another book by her, if and when it happens.

So many teenagers will likely to relate to Aaliyah's story, whether they're struggling with similar things at home, trying to figure out dating/their sexuality, and still trying to maintain friendships when everything else seems like it's falling apart. Aaliyah is a strong protagonist for this book, with an authentic voice, surrounded by characters who are just as fleshed out as her. It's one of the main reasons I was so drawn into the story. Character-driven books are my jam.

Overall, this is definitely a strong debut, and I can't wait to see what Erika Turner comes up with next.

Felt like it did a good job of detailing a messiness of high school, self-exploration, etc.  Often times homophobia is not unsurprising in YA books, but I really, really do wish the audiobook would have had some content warnings especially for self-harm and substance use disorders (specifically living with a parent who has alcohol use disorder), the book tackle some heavy topics.

Thanks to Macmillan for the free advance copy of this book.

 - AND OTHER MISTAKES is the book you're looking for if you want a coming of age story that's messy, emotional, and filled with all the uncertainties of being a teenager.
- Not only that, but it's a diverse cast that's being allowed to be messy and difficult, featuring kids from many different background and with varying identities.
- I loved the exploration of the lines between friendship and love, and how extra messy they can get when queerness enters into the equation.
- Please do check the content warnings, since this book is pretty heavy. If you're up for it, it's more than worth it.
