The story line and setting did sound promising: Eve Coffin is the heiress of one of New England's oldest and richest witch bloodline.

However the characters were lacking in depth and the overall interactions between them seemed extremely flat. What was most annoying to me was the corny,"teenagy", remarks and dialogues.

It is pretty difficult to understand what is happening since the events are not flowy and are not explained well. The ending is the most unnerving. We don't even know who the deceased detective is. Why is Eve under arrest for his murder? This does not intrigue the reader nor does it want us to read Volume 2.... It is simply annoying.

All the girls who work at my local comic store strongly recommended this, and unfortunately I couldn't get into the story no matter how hard I tried. Nevertheless, I am going to get the second volume to see if it gets any better.

Witches are so hot right now. Coffin Hill's first arc is pretty good, though I was more interested in the back story and the history of the Coffin witches than the ongoing action. Maybe with the next arc, some of the storytelling that seems weak will prove to be purposeful leads - but as is there are a lot of unanswered questions that feel less like teasers and more like dropped plot. There were a few times when the story telling was unclear and disjointed, and I had to go back to figure out what was happening. The art is very pretty, in that horror, dripping with blood way. I'll keep reading. 3.5 stars.

Amazing artwork. This was a really cool graphic novel. Some parts were a little confusing to me, but I loved the back and forth between the present story and flashbacks. A lot going on, which is slightly overwhelming, but most of it is tied up by the end. Definitely looking forward to the second volume to learn more about adult Eve's backstory. If you like witches and lots of blood, check this one out. Pretty graphic images, but well-done so they do not come off as gory.

Not nearly as entertaining as I wanted it to be, but it was fine and I'll probably check out the next volume.

Coffin Hill is such a pretty story! The story is kinda of Meh, it jumps about and I'm not EXACTLY sure what is going on. I know there is something out there that takes over the bodies of dead humans and eats other humans.... maybe they'll explain it in the next volume.
But hey, Coffin Hill really grabbed me by the pants when I picked it up. The pictures are really freaky, really well done, and sexy as hell. I am not going to recommend this for the story, even thought it isn't particularly bad, but read it because it is just so well put together.

I thought this book was just the right amount of creepy and scary for me, and I am interested in learning more about Eve Coffin, but I'm not sure I'm terribly interested in the cliffhanger for this book: Eve being arrested for the murder of summer guy we've never heard of. The witchy stuff was good, though, and intriguing, and I really liked the art.

Only slightly creepy, but very cool looking comic with an annoyingly convoluted plot.

description

Witches, crazy rituals, possible child abduction, murder, a forest that maybe kills people, or at least transforms them (this part oddly reminded me of a movie I watched only yesterday).

description

Several timelines that do not exactly dovetail nicely. Transition from one scene to another and between the timelines could and probably should have been done better. Several strands of the plot don't go anywhere. They're just left dangling. In short, it's quite hard to follow.

Good artwork, though, and a very cool style. Some of the page layouts are very pretty and inventive at times. And I think the main character is kinda cool.

I hear that the second volume fills in a lot of the gaps. So I think I'll continue with this one before I've forgotten what little I could piece together of the plot.

The ending didn't make much sense to me. But we'll see where this goes.

This was a buddy-read with Cathy, who was a little more annoyed by the plot holes than I was. So I will have to read the second one alone.

(Read all volumes)

Everyone in this talks the same, most of them look the same and the multiple timelines may as well all be the same. Several key moments are easily missed because of bad art choices. At least the plot is boring and convoluted! I think maybe horror comics are something we haven't figured out yet.
