The writing style of this book almost resembles a fairytale, as does its plot. However, partway through the book, some surprisingly mature themes are introduced. I included a minor content warning for sexual assault, which I didn't expect considering the protagonist is a 12-year-old.
I felt that this book was missing something, but I'm not sure what it is. It may have to do with how seemingly everything in it revolves around Asian discrimination to a sometimes absurd degree. The writing style is simplistic but suitable, and the themes, while overt, ring true. Nevertheless, I still feel that there is something lacking here.
