“You are my creator, but I am your master; – obey!” BARS!!!!! This quote goes so fucking hard and beautifully captures some Themes.

Anyway. Like most classics this is beautifully written but so goddamn looooooong. Someone needs to go in a time machine and force these bitches to break up their paragraphs oh my goooooood. And it might’ve been because I was so tired reading the last chapter, but that was such a slog! And SIX CHAPTERS OF MONSTER MONOLOGUING?? JESUS CHRIST HELLO???

Also. When were viktor and Henry going to kiss?? Viktor and Robert even?? Gay people are real and they’re in Europe?? You don’t speak about your friend like that and don’t desire them carnally. Just sayin.

A classic famous for the creation of the sci-fi genre. It uses strong religious imagery to paint a picture of humanity and what distinguishes humans from "daemons" and higher powers. Seamlessly blends science, philosophy, and creationism. Although the gruesome deeds and persons lack greater detail, the light description allows the imagination to fill in the horrific blanks.

TBH it does feel a little ridiculous to be like “oh this book about the creation of human life that pioneered Science Fiction as a genre… is commenting on the morality behind creation, for creations sake, and the responsibility associated with bringing forth life against its will.” but it IS! AH the pitfalls of man’s hubris to play god!
I am having one of those moments where you read a classic and you’re like oh! This is good. Does anyone know? Are people aware of this?
“You throw a torch into a pile of buildings, and when they are consumed you sit among the ruins, and lament the fall.”

I tried reading Frankenstein several years ago but didn’t get past the first few pages. Attempting it again, I was surprised at how absorbed I became. Not so much in the story itself, but the questions pondered, particularly involving the 'being'.

After seeing endless spoofs in TV shows or movies, I went into this expecting some form of satire. That's not to say I was under the impression this was a comedy… I'm not sure how to put my exact expectations into words. Anyway, as it went on, I got the gothic feel, though I wouldn't personally consider this a horror story. Twisted, but not particularly scary. It felt very literary.

I found Victor easy to dislike and I sympathized more with his creation at first. Then the tables turned, and then by the end, I wasn't sure who I ought to root for. I love books that leave me feeling unsettled. I also think listening to this book on audio also made the difference. The narrator did a fantastic job portraying the being. It added so much to the atmosphere of the story. I'm already looking forward to a future reread.

Incredible examination of the psychological consequences of making a being and then abandoning them, reads very easily and definitely deserves its title as a classic of English literature
