"For the young girls and women brought to life in these stories, the possibility of change, of starting anew, is both as terrifying and filled with promise as the ocean that separates them from their homes in India. From the story of a young bride whose fairy-tale vision of California is shattered when her husband is murdered and she must face the future on her own, to a proud middle-aged divorced woman determined to succeed in San Francisco." (From Amazon)

A good collection of short stories.

I love Divakaruni's voice and how she illuminates our everday lives; their complexities and simplicities alike affecting who we are, how we react to others, and who we eventually grow up to be.
More specifically, in relating to the aspect of arranged marriage (something I have only witnessed in novels and movies), she explores its strengths and weaknesses in ways that made me reflect on the choices I have in my own life. Is it always best that we choose for ourselves? Do others sometimes know us better and therefore, know who would be a more suitable mate for us? Divakaruni alludes to these questions in the weaving of her tales and not only in relation to the women, but the men as well.

It was like reading short weekly stories that come in magazines.

Each story crafted with a sense of love with little bit of hatred and seriousness.

And all the factors responsible for slaying an Arranged Marriage were thoroughly discussed through well planned characters.

I will easily believe if someone says that all these stories were based on real life incidents.

Thanks Chitra Ma'am for a good read. ;)

A compelling collection of short stories about different marriages written by a woman born in India. These stories linger. I’m looking forward to reading some of her novels.

** Books 187 - 2014 **

Buku ini berisikan tentang 11 kisah pernikahan yang dijodohkan entah itu hidup di negeri india ataupun di Amerika. kisah suka duka wanita dalam pernikahan intinya. Lagi-lagi saya dibuat kecele berharap karya yang satu ini seindah seperti [b:The Palace of Illusions|6591999|The Palace of Illusions (Istana Khayalan)|Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1246752697s/6591999.jpg|25128382] tetapi kenyataan pahit yang saya terima isinya setipe mirip dengan [b:The Unknown Errors of Our Lives|7711958|The Unknown Errors of Our Lives|Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1334223357s/7711958.jpg|25148013]

Even though i am not Indian, somehow the book reminds me of a lot of things i grew up with, a lot of experiences i saw women around me have back in the 90s. Being a woman is unfortunately quite a universal experience I guess.
