Thank you Jim Hines for this book - I was at a loss, despite the size of my TBR shelf and bumbled from opening chapters to opening chapters of several books before The Snow Queen's Shadow grabbed hold of my reading brain and wouldn't let go! A fantastic end to a great series, thoroughly enjoyed it!

While this is the fourth of a series, I reckon it stands up on its own - Jim's books get better and better.

Not as good as the first three, but probably because I read it way after the first three and forgot some of it.

I appreciate that the ending was not particularly happy; i think it would have felt false if every conflict had been solved and all the princesses had emerged unscathed. I have very little tolerance for evil characters, it turns out, so i got exceedingly frustrated with snow and almost stopped reading a few times because i was so mad at her. But i did finish, and I'll miss living in a series wherein everyone noteworthy is female, and more than a couple are queer.

He definitely took things to the next level with the final (for now?) book in the Princess series. There were things I liked, and things I did not, but overall a strong story that definitely kept me guessing till the very end.

A good end to a series I dearly loved, though it disappointed me in certain ways. Particularly, I find the resolution of a storyline between two of the characters to be too convenient for the emotions it evoked. But, having said that, this whole series is a fantastic romp for anyone interested in fairy tale retellings, and my feelings on the end won't stop me from recommending it to fantasy fans.
