Definitely need to listen to the audio book for this one, because hearing Wil read it himself makes all the difference.

Awesome audiobook. I heartily recommend you hear it read by the author. His passion really shows. Several stories; some touching, some funny. Very much worth the time. Wil is a good writer and now I want to read more of his works.

It's a little weird coming to an author via seeing him do a hilarious parody (although maybe it's not a parody, but his constant one-upping of Sheldon is a delight) himself on the Big Bang Theory and being an enormous fan of his audiobook narration. Naturally, I picked up the b-sides to Wil Wheaton's autobiography Just a Geek on audiobook (and haven't had a chance to get to Just a Geek because the audiobook is super out of print). Wheaton warns up front that one story is very sad (the one about the death of his great aunt) and one is "pretty damn sentimental" (I'm guessing the one about playing with his stepkids) and there's a vein of sentimentality that runs through all of these. They're true and honest, but the only one that really lands is the epic finale about guesting at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas. The unique perspective of "The Adventures of Sponge Bob Vegas Pants" is fantastic, and anecdotes about stuff like meeting William Shatner and Shatner being a total dick and pissing off a packed auditorium of Trekkies by admitting not being into Voyager or Deep Space Nine are super funny and fascinating. And even though the first four essays didn't do much for me, Wheaton's earnestness and genuine uh, heartfeltness, is undeniable and listening to this just made me wonder why he can't narrate every book I want to read.
