Very engaging, hated certain elements and the last few pages (Jocelyn), felt like the plot twist changed so much that it wasn't that satisfying, also it became kind of ambiguous which was an unpleasant surprise.
Graphic: Rape and Suicide
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Child abuse, Child death, Domestic abuse, and Pedophilia

3.5 rounded up due to the last page. I was going to five it 5 stars while reading the first half. Unfortunately, I didn't like the direction the story takes in the second half. It still kept me totally engrossed though. And the last page really feels like an apt ending to this horror story.
I am still confused about one thing though.
What I have mentioned in the spoiler makes me wonder if the whole thing is actually a story written by someone who would've made an excellent author as opposed to the fact that part of it really happened and his trauma led him to imagine/think the rest.

Spoiler
Why did nothing come of the discovery in Joe's house? The author says 'there was no mention' of it in the reports he heard later. Does this mean there was nothing for cops to discover or was it simply hushed up?What I have mentioned in the spoiler makes me wonder if the whole thing is actually a story written by someone who would've made an excellent author as opposed to the fact that part of it really happened and his trauma led him to imagine/think the rest.

I went into this book thinking it would scare the crap out of me. It didn't. The Patient is creepy and scary, but it didn't keep me up all night, like I'd been lead to believe. I read this in a single night via audiobook with the lights off. I wanted to be scared.
Maybe horror just doesn't scary me in literature as much as it does visually with movies. The Patient is about a new psychiatrist who begins working at a psych ward. He immediately feels drawn to a patient because he's unreachable.
Nobody talks to him, with the exception of a few regulars (nurse to deliver medication and an orderly to change the sheets). This patient no longer receives services and he's basically a hotel guest that everyone refuses to be around.
Naturally, Parker wants to help him and feels that he may be the one doctor to save his patient named Joe.
The rest of the novel follows Parker has he attempts to help this incredibly creepy and disturbing patient. There's paranormal vibes, as well as that creepy psych ward setting. It's a great Halloween read.
I think I was so hyped up for this one, however, that it let me down. I was expecting this book to give me nightmares, but the ending was just okay. I saw it coming and the scary scenes did give me chills in the moment. None of the images stuck with me, though. I wasn't thinking about them late in the night while I was trying to sleep.
It's an intriguing story that I'd recommend for a Halloween night escape.

This was a Goodreads Giveaway win. I love winning books! Thank you to Goodreads and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. I received this book for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
If you're looking for a creepy Halloween read, this one fits the bill. But beware there is a scene of animal cruelty.
As usual, I went into this blindly, not reading the synopsis. So I wasn't expecting this to be more horror/supernatural. That's not what I was prepared for, but it’s October and the perfect time.
Dr. H is telling his story by posting online, in a forum. He’s a psychiatrist working for a dilapidated psychiatric hospital and becomes fixated on treating a patient in the facility, like several providers before him. The patient, called Joe, has been a patient since he was a young child and has been proclaimed incurable. He is allowed little contact, and there are numerous stories about strange behavior plaguing anyone who has contact with him. Joe is creepy and you wouldn’t have to ask me twice to stay away from him!
This is a quick, spooky read that’s perfect for October.
