A fun, fast paced read with a great main character and side characters. It has some dark topics but I think they are tackled well and the tone is still kept mostly light with the antics of Phryne.

I was a little worried going into this. I knew there was a TV show based on this series, but I've never watched it. The writing is very fast paced, flying through events so quickly that sometimes I had to stop to double check the grammar and sentence structure. There's a fun cast of characters and more diversity than I expected.
Though, I really didn't appreciate the unfortunate  implication that asexual people are amoral, immature, and power hungry.
I don't think I will continue with the series, but I am glad I read it and it was a pretty fun wacky ride.

I seem to be in the minority here but I didn't care for this book very much. I love the tv series and did know that there were differences between the show and the books. But most of my issues have nothing to do with those differences. Phryne is a lot less charming here and a complete Mary Sue character; brilliant at everything; all of the guys, and most of the girls, want her; the most beautiful, wonderful, amazing woman to exist. Em...no. On top of all this the writing was not great, the prose was clunky, the dialogue worse and there were too many plot lines happening, especially for such a short book.
I shall be sticking with the tv series, a rare case of the show being better than the book.
