Like True Detective but in some ways more successful than True Detective because it's a novel and complex metaphors work better on the page. Dark, violent, very hard-boiled, almost poetic at points and a little Chandler-esque that way. Noir with feelings. I liked it a lot.

Wow. Great noir piece. Really atmoshpheric, very violent (but it all serves the story) and very memorable, flawed characters. Beautiful writing. Just a knockout of a book.

Good crime novel, and one that fits very nicely, in tone, with the True Detective series on HBO (which was created by the author of this book). Quick read. I believe it's set to become a movie, and it'll make a pretty good one if they don't try to soften the dark parts too much.

A work of noir fiction by the creator of True Detective, Galveston is a short but atmospheric read that is more character-centric than I expected. Recommended to fans of the genre or someone looking to get into the genre, but passable otherwise.

Great Roman Noir by Nic Pizzolatto, creator of "True Detective". If you like books like Dennis Lehan's [b:Mystic River|21671|Mystic River|Dennis Lehane|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1395182642s/21671.jpg|1234249] and other non-redemptive noir novels like the classic of the genre [b:Nightmare Alley|7140096|Nightmare Alley|William Lindsay Gresham|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348006083s/7140096.jpg|535277] you'll really enjoy this.

Solidly written, thoughtful exploration of an anti-hero who tries to become a hero. He doesn't quite succeed, but his attempts are heartbreaking, and sordid, in equal measure.

My own detective novel [b:Coeur d'Alene Waters|17858783|Coeur d'Alene Waters|Ned Hayes|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1381090396s/17858783.jpg|24965017] is more redemptive than this dark tale, but I like the clarity of the first person point of view in Nic Pizzolatto's work, and the consistency of his narrative.

If you like True Detective, this is the book for you!

Just not in the mood to read this book right now. Got to the point where our 30-something male protagonist starts talking about how perfect an 18 year old's body is because she has no body fat yet and I just got too creeped out. Maybe some other day, but it's unlikely.
