Feel like maybe I've been stingy with my starts lately...this was probably 3.5 for me. Agree with the reviewer who said, 'Strong start, weak finish.' Premise was interesting and pretty compelling but thought the ending got a little out of hand. Too much unexplained magic happening too fast. Also would've liked a little more background on the whole demon/magic thing and some more on the relationship to the library and how 'regular' people fit into all this. Could've probably left the romance element subplot out too. Still searching for an uber compelling YA series where I can't wait to grab the next one...this wasn't it for me.

With having just finished this book, I feel like 3 stars is the best I can do. Earlier I was sure I'd be giving it a 3,5 star rating but somehow the ending just didn't convince me anymore.

This story has so much potential right from the start, but I feel the execution remains too superficial. A lot of things would've faired better, in my honest opinon, if it maybe was written as a duology? (and if we had Nathaniel's pov as well for example) I think as a stand alone it just hasn't been able to reach its full potential unfortunately. There's so much that I would've loved to read more about and that I think would've helped giving the story more depth.

What I really did love were the Paranormal elements and the concept of this story with these grimoires 'coming alive', having souls and turn into monsters sometimes. That was truly magnificent and interesting. I really loved the dark vibe that's present throughout the story and I liked most of the characters as well as the writing style, that I think was beautiful.

But the story itself, the development and depth in general... it's not all that I hoped it'd be beforehand and I just needed 'more' I guess? I feel like the story barely scratched the surface of what was possible here.

conclusion
Overall it was definitely enjoyable though but with every positive thing I can point out, there's definitely a counter mark to be made as well. It was just not as impressive as I hoped it'd be. I'd still recommend it to other readers who are interested in the synopsis of this book.

What a fun and magical standalone novel. I wish there were more like this.
