This is quite a tough read. It portrays the atrocities of the event very vividly.

The book uses different writing styles, such as some chapters being in second person (although not the same consistent ‘you’ throughout), and one chapter told from the perspective of one of the dead. Although these were interesting, I personally found it quite hard to follow the plot because of it.

"After you died I could not hold a funeral, and so my life became a funeral."

Written in a poetic, self-reflecting style, "Human Acts" tells a story  of Gwangju Uprising (South Korea, 1980). But it could also be the story of Soviet terror in Eastern Europe, of BLM movement in the States, of so many other events where innocent lives were lost to government's violence - because it is not just a story, it's the lives that were taken, lives that were forsaken and lives that were forever altered.

One of the most heartbreaking reads of my life.
