In the beginning I really enjoyed this, because it's very well written and I didn't mind that nothing much happens, but then the second part felt excruciatingly long

Disturbing account of nine days in a women's detention cell in Russia. It reminded me forcibly of The Yellow Wallpaper in some ways. Not entirely successful -- I think it might have worked better if the author hadn't included flashbacks to Anya's life outside the prison.

During the middle of this book I was gripped, and I feel like I learnt so much about life in contemporary Russia and their practices of detention. But other elements of this book I didn’t really get (the hallucinations/fantasy element) and found some of the backstory just a bit hard to believe.
