4.5

rating: 4.5/5

i read this book in the span of 8 hours without planning to. once i got sucked in, i couldn’t stop until i finished. the plot twists were very well executed imo because i didn’t expect them at all, but they weren’t outlandish and they made sense in the story. i really enjoyed this book and i’m still thinking about it and about jeff and sadie and martha and all of them.

- spoilers ahead, beware! -

the only reason i gave it a 4.5 is because of rankin; i understand why he was important in furthering the plot, but i wish it could have been done in a way that didn’t entail rankin basically molesting and attempting to rape jeff. or, if that part was kept, then i wish the author would have gone more into depth about it instead of just kind of brushing it off as “sexual assault but not” and then diving straight into jeff being gay. i don’t know if this is making sense, but i just mean that i wish that subplot had been done better.

anyway, i loved this book, and i definitely see it as one im going to come back to every once in a while just to see jeff and amanda and martha and sadie and juliet and bone and cat poop again :)

I was expecting to relate to the main character's struggle with mental illness and trauma. I knew this was going to be a dark book going into it, but what ended up triggering me was not anything to do with Jeff's stay on a pysch ward. It was
Spoilerthe gay panic/sexual assult scenes
that really upset me and made the rest of the book impossible to enjoy. The consolation prize is that there is a happy ending, which I was expecting and hoping for.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. The only reason I finished it was because I fell for the sunk cost falacy. I'll be returning this to Barnes & Noble asap.

Trigger warning for: sexual assault, slurs, suicide/suicide attempts, and many more
