Bilal cooks Daal manages to both communicate Bilal's comfort and discomfort with sharing a family dish he loves. He wonders if his friends will like daal as much he does. I loved the idea of a community of friends coming together to learn about their friends culture and eat good food.

By now it is obvious that I love picture books that center around food. Well, in this one, I love that it is a food that many people, myself included, are not that familiar with--daal. This book is descriptive in the ingredients needed, in the time it takes to make the dish. And the part I liked best? All of Bilal's friends getting excited to try the daal. Food is a bridge y'all!

I thoroughly enjoy children's books that introduce different cultures and especially their foods.
Like this book, they are best when they have the actual recipe somewhere in the book for us to try it out!

Bilal wants to share his favorite dish with his friends but he's not sure they will like it. I don't know about you but daal sounds delicious! Good thing there's a recipe in the back matter!

Read for Librarian Book Group
Bilal and his friends learn about daal. There is a recipe at the end of the book, thankfully.
It seems like Bilal livers in a lovely neighborhood chock full of friends and things to do.

I loved this sweet book about an Indian child sharing his family's food tradition with his friends. It was so much fun to read, and it made me very hungry!!

A very cute story about a boy who introduces his friends to his favorite food...daal. This would be a great story to read to lower elementary students about different family recipes. There is even a few facts and recipe instructions at the end of the story.
