Now first thing that popped in my head was I don’t think I can read this during the first chapter. I know some people here couldn’t get into it, which made it a little hard for me to read at first. I was kind of in shock because it’s seemed very degrading. But honestly it gave me Gladiator/300 vibes. And I plan on reading the series be cause the ending wasn’t enough! I also like the fact that it was in both male/female perspective. But I do feel maybe people should know this book should have a warning label for people who are triggered for there is a lot of mixed emotions for the characters on SA. I hope this helps.

I read this trilogy many years ago, before the birth of the internet and social media. I am a longtime member of the BDSM community, so I took it for what it was...a Master/slave fantasy written by a vanilla author. If you have no understanding of BDSM, don't bother with this trilogy. The imagery will make your head explode, and you just won't get the appeal. It is NOT for everybody.
You also must understand that Anne Rice is a prolific writer. She uses flowery words and relies more on exposition than character interaction. If you're just trying to "get to the good stuff", you'll be disappointed. This is intellectual smut, and that's not for everybody, either.
The audiobooks were narrated by Elizabeth Montgomery, whose voice I have always loved. Very stimulating.

After the foreword, I really had high hopes for this. But it started off with non-con and it just continued down that road pretty long. I read about halfway and 80% of it is non-con. So really not great. There was also steam on probably each page. I generally have no issue with this but there was no character development and basically no story.
How am I supposed to enjoy the steam if there are no real characters, no real plot and most of this is consensual? Not really sure.
I really wanted to like this because it seemed right up my alley but yikes.
After dragging myself through half of this book for a week hoping it would get better I finally decided to move onto something better.

Every other sentence starts with “and”, Anne Rice appears to have abandoned the idea of an editor, and if I have to hear “scrotum” used as a sexy word one more time, I might scream. Also, the spanking. It never ends. There are other things you can do to a person, but I’m not sure Rice knows that. Or has ever seen another person naked.
