I think overall it’s a really good book and I would be open to reading other things from this author. I will say it wasn’t perfect, I feel like it could have been cut in half. I don’t think this is a spoiler, but you’re following an unreliable narrator that you find out something is off very early on so by the end of the book you’re kind of just feeling like “can someone please just tell me what’s going on?”. While the climax is good, you’ve already been through like 4 other instances that you thought was the climax. I just felt like it was kind of just repetitive and at one point it literally was a whole scene that was repeated.
Like I said it was a really good book, I just want others going into it to know so it’s a better experience for them. Also, I highly suggest getting the audiobook. The voice actress did a phenomenal job! I really felt immersed because of her.
Now this might be a
so watch out, but the ending while sweet I don’t know how I felt about the paranormal aspect of it. I’m conflicted on that. Kind of cheesy but 🤷🏻‍♀️

A little slow at the start but once it picks up, it picks up so quick! The ending makes so much sense but in a way you would never guess.

A grotesque, sometimes overly-detailed book in which the main character is a unique mixture of impulsive, silly, and gruesome. The end “scene” plays out for entirely too long, and large swaths of the book require suspending belief that anyone is competent or has morals.

I was really enjoying it at first. The first few chapters were great and I could see how the big reveal was organized and there definitely was an attempt. However, it was kind of hard to follow near the end, I felt like the
killer was kind of random and only hinted at the beginning with the Axe or whatever
...or maybe I didn't read into the lines enough. Something that didn't sit right with me was
Garett's sudden change in character? First he didn't want anything to do with the house but near the end my guy is basically an accomplice to the whole thing, he knows the truth about Erin and Leah but he didn't ever bother telling authorities?
Also I wanna rant soooooo bad about Dixie, but she's funny so it makes up for her absolutely psychotic behaviour. I could totally see this as a Netflix show or an episode of black mirror and you best believe I'd eat that sh*t upppp.

Wow this book was a wild ride that I thoroughly enjoyed and could NOT put down. Loved the plot, guessed *some* of the twists, but not all! The dialog was sometimes a bit....sitcom-y sometimes?? And it sort of threw me off a bit, but I eventually got used to it and let the story take me away. Was gory but not the most so that I have ever read. For this author's first novel it was very well done!

main character suffers from being annoying disease sometimes (in terms of when she is herself, not relating to the story) but the author makes up for it with how brilliantly written all the spooky stuff is written. however,
i found it to be glaringly obvious from nearly the get-go that is was ford. no idea if the level of obviousness was intentional or not
, but i still really enjoyed the experience. i couldn't put the book down for the last third of it.

Theme Music has been on my TBR for months and I was so happy to finally get to it. Though this novel didn’t end up being exactly what I expected, I wasn’t disappointed.

The unreliable narrator trope is one of my favorites and I think this book does that trope so well. Dixie is the ultimate unreliable narrator especially considering she doesn’t even know what’s happening most of the time. I enjoyed her as the novel’s voice, she was funny and at times frustrating but I still found myself hoping desperately everything would work out for her. I also liked that at any given time the reader only knew as much as Dixie knew, which kept us in the dark as much as she had been the majority of her life. I found that to be effective and kept me guessing until pretty far into the book.

I had my suspicions about what may have been happening by the climax but I think I literally suspected almost every main character at some point in time.
I actually only figured it out because I was skimming the beginning and came upon the first paragraph about the axe, and when I was presented with a four letter word beginning with F again, it clicked for me. Despite having mostly figured it out, I still didn’t expect the ending and was very anxious for Dixie and her neighbors.

I thought that even though the story dragged just a little around the 50% - 75% mark, the ending was satisfactory for me. I especially enjoyed the epilogue because I’m nosy and I want to know where our characters end up. I realize that this kind of ending is not everyone’s favorite but I appreciate being left with some questions, I actually think all the answers are there if we look back (upon a second read I definitely began to theorize why some things happened the way they did) but again, we only ever know as much as Dixie so some things are up to the reader’s discretion. Books tend to have more staying power with me if I’m left to interpret afterward.

This was a successful read for me, I felt pretty enthralled through most of it.
