First off— I had mixed emotions about this book, being trending all over TikTok, people obsessing over it, getting TATTOOED about it and endless fan art edits. But I also happen to LOVE Greek mythology and everything around it. Many years ago I have seen Troy, you know, that Brad Pitt movie where he stars as Achilles, so I had a slight sliver of sense of what this story was about so this book obviously made me curious, I HAD to read it, just to see if the hype was worth it or I was just totally wasting my time.
Let me tell you this; this book, this mother effing masterpiece, was worth every single minute spent reading it. It did not disappoint, not a tinsy bit. I haven’t cried that much when reading a book, it had me ugly crying for more than an hour, I kid you not, I had to take off my glasses, they were FILLED with tears, I have literally not cried this hard ever since I read The Fault in Our Stars, and that was circa 2014.
This BookTok find was just the best one I have ever encountered, I don’t think there will be another book that makes me cry that hard, and if so, it has to be so deeply, gut-wrenching, painful, and just filled with sorrow to beat The Song of Achilles’ effect on me.
Patroclus has won my heart on every possible way, his kindness, his naiveness, his pure heart, his urge to protect Achilles, just simply every single thing about him made me fall head over heels in love with him and his story. Being a prince, exiled because of an accident he did not intend in any way, being an outsider, not feeling at home. But then, he meets Achilles and his world and his heart simply turned upside down.
I don’t want to give off much, but this book is really really worth the hype in every possible way. It captivates you from the moment you start reading it, even with the first chapter that one has absolutely no idea what you are reading, it still grabs you by the face and entices you to keep reading and reading, until you get to the end and find yourself crying like a little child.
I loved it so much.
AND I’M TATTOOING MYSELF ABOUT IT WHENEVER I GET THE CHANCE.
SECOND READ REVIEW:
Forever a 5/5 for me
This is the second review I’m giving this one, the first time around I read it, it was on my iPad, since I loved it so much, i bought it and decided to read and annotate it.
I must warn you, if you ever decide to re-read this, it’s going to hurt WAY MUCH MORE than the first time, I sobbed and cried a lot more, I swear to God I had to stop and brEATHE.
I hated Achilles a lot more this time, I understood way better his pride and his well, FUCKING BRATTY attitude towards the last fourth of the book, I really, really wanted to beat the pride out of him, he literally caused Patrlocus’ death by the MILLIONS, I know it was already stated in the prophecy, but it could’ve been anyone else and not him.
Update on my last review, i DID get a tattoo about this book, I wasn’t kidding lol
I love this book to the millions, I will always have it in my soul (and my arm, literally), I have never loved a book this much in my life and I want everyone to read this and understand why I love it so much, Patrlocus and Achilles’ love is just so devastating, sad, ugly-sobbing-worthy but god, so true and pure that makes my heart break in a million pieces. I hope someday find someone who loves me as Patrlocus loved Achilles.

i didn’t understand a big chunk of the words but the story was still really good, gave it a 4/5 from my own stupidity of not knowing little to nothing about greek mythology
