challenging informative slow-paced

2.5

This book is great at laying out the history of populism and nationalism and addressing certain assumptions about those who vote for national populists. However, this book falls flat in the chapter entitled 'Destruction'. The authors go to such length claiming that not all voters are racist that they make some questionable statements including insinuating that believing that 'Islam is a threat to the West' is not racist (it is) as well as making claims straight from the highly incendiary Great Replacement Theory. Overall this chapter, and moments from the rest of the book, leave a sour taste in my mouth and bring it down to a 2.5*.

Lots of great data and a clear hypothesis, but there's little qual data to bring the narrative to life. It's also likely too credulous and naive around aspects of US politics.
