I dropped this series 8 or so years ago because Darrow's decline from a man of the people into a man of war made my heart too sad. Picking this book up after so many years later and I forgot just how gruesome the Red Rising series can be. I know it's called Dark Age, but goddamn, read the content warnings. Once again, characters you love die and things only get worse for our cast. Fingers crossed that it eventually looks up.

This was a long time coming. I put off reading this book for so long. Finally, I have conquered it. And it certainly lived up to its name. This book was dark. It was sad. It was miserable. There were hardly any happy scenes. This book was war and death and slaughter and more war and murder and more death. It was not enjoyable, but at the same time it was so compelling. That’s the thing about Pierce Brown. These books aren’t happy, but they suck you in. The characters are such geniuses in some senses, and so lacking in other areas. All of our characters have their biases and are utterly convinced of their own righteousness. It’s fascinating.

The darkest chapter yet of the red rising sequel trilogy - the Lysander chapters tend to drag a bit, and the non-stop existential brooding of Darrow can grind things to a halt. Ephraim’s story continues to be the most engaging of the sequel series, and Lyria get a lot of character growth that helps make what would otherwise be an annoying plucky “resistance” nu Star Wars character a much more interesting and fascinating experience.

Victra is easily a standout - something about her haughty, better-than-you tone just works, and she’s a far better POV character to have as a grown adult than she would have been in the previous books.

The darkness is grim and the grimness is dark, but it looks like we’re seeing the end of the tunnel with this space opera of a story.
