I liked it. The writing is definitely better than the writing in Song of the Lioness. I'm intrigued by the characters and the magic is pretty darn interesting. I haven't formed an opinion about this particular universe yet, as I am in mourning for Tortall.

I was a bit confused about what exactly happened in the end, so the book felt a bit anticlimactic to me.

But I still enjoyed it!

I'm looking forward to the next book!

It's very middle grade, but at the same time very enjoyable story with interesting ideas.

One of those books I would have loved to read for the first time when I was 10-12. And also, one of the books about which I can say "better late than never".

Fine book, definitely character building and world building. Reading it leaves a very positive impression, but looking at it critically, it's hard to see why it feels so good. It's not overly perfect writing, or excellently described characters, or mind shatteringly original. It's a good solid story with characters that are believable and fun to hang out with.
