The first half of the book was kind of slow and hard to get into. I enjoyed the last portion when she set out in the wilderness and met her eventual husband.

I was awfully disappointed after reading this book. It starts out fabulous. The first half is great. Our protagonist is interesting, the other characters are engaging, the relationships are compelling. Then it turns into an epic tale with no tension because I was totally unconnected emotionally. Also, I hate when the author gets more billing (font size) than the title of the book.

The was an ARC that I recieved from Librarything! (thanks!). I really enjoyed this book. The writer really got to the complexity of the characters and I grew to really know each of them. I would definately recommend this book!

I am by no means an English literature specialist and much of this book went over my head. Maybe the moral was that you get a chance to live many lives during your life, and everyone of them changes and shapes you in various ways. This was Lillian's legacy and her story.

Update: I read some reviews. ... It was a dream?! Surely not.

This is a compelling adventure story that I found smooth and pleasant to read. It is in a voice that has only enough depth to scratch the surface of human emotions and psyches. But, she seems to keep it at this level to keep it upbeat and fast moving. There are lots of interesting character profiles and scenes from the 1920's that I have never thought or read about. This is the first fiction I've read about the Russian pogroms and it is enlightening. My main critcism is that there is some gratuitous sexual tension. But, it always stops right when you think it will be too violent or victimizing to the women- so it's forgiveable. I'd highly recommend it...it definitely takes you to another place and time with crisp, clear detail. And you want to know what will happen the whole time.

Couldn't even finish reading it. No one at book club liked it. There are too many other good books out there to read!

Liked this more once she "left NY". Reminds me if Wild by Cheryl Strayed.... Only 80 years earlier.
