The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 is still something to marvel at. It’s so foreign, so other-worldly, that I just can’t imagine 1500 people drowning in the middle of the ocean. That something that massive and proud would hit an iceberg and just go down is unbelievable.

Three points baffled me. One, the crew completely ignored the warnings about the ice. Two, the escape boats left the ship not even close to full capacity. Three, the poorer passengers in the heart of the ship were largely forgotten and left to fend for themselves.

The best part of the book was the author detailing how the Titanic was more like a Greek tragedy than anything else. Many things could’ve occurred to prevent the devastating event, but everything went against it. It was a series of unfortunate maladies.

My first ever time reading a narrative non-fiction book I believe, and I’m not sure if I’m a fan of the genre but I am of this book. Shocking details and statistics, particularly about how well first class men fared in survival statistics when compared with third class women and children

Excellent account of the Titanic disaster based on the first-hand accounts of more than 60 survivors interviewed by the author.

A non-fiction narrative of the final hours of the Titanic, pieced together from firsthand accounts by survivors. Whether the survivors embellished their stories or remembered incorrectly, this is still an incredibly interesting look inside one of the greatest disasters in human history. Highly recommend for history buffs.

And seriously, can we talk about how stupid the crew of the Californian was? I mean my God, they did NOTHING, despite being RIGHT there and seeing with their own eyes the Titanic behaving oddly.
