This is a beautiful book. Poetry and sketches tell the story of the author's family. It is listed as a middle grade book, however, the poetry is above 4th and 5th graders without a lot of support.

Powerful words and beautiful illustrations take a multi-generational look at how family was defined and shattered through enslavement. This novel-in-verse is told in the voices of the author's ancestors. By sharing their family’s story, the Weatherfords are helping to reshape the narrative around enslavement. Includes references, an author's and illustrator's note, and a bibliography offering sources for additional research.
