Repetitive and bland. Charlie N Holmberg's books do start off very interesting but they have a tendency of either reading like a short outline or being very unoriginal and motivation-less plot wise. Things happen because she wants them to, conflicts go on and on for books when everything could be wrapped up in just one 500 page book.

new and “novel”

A new system of magic is rare. The author has come up with an intriguing one, with possible future complications.
The characters are deep and real. The choices are grown up and difficult.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and can’t wait for the next one!

I'll be honest. I expected a mildly entertaining read (3 out of 5 at best), and I was only vaguely interested in one of the two characters in the book description - Rone just sounded lame, like a token love interest to Sandis.

Without spoiling anything, let me just say that I WAS WRONG. SO WRONG. The plot was spellbinding from chapter one, and both of the main characters had me instead in their wellbeing. I can't wait to read more!

Super unique concept but the execution is a bit too overdramatic for me. Not sure if it’s because of the narration but I was simply exhausted when we got to the end.

I loved the magic system in the novel, as it was darker than I expected from this author and fascinating in a way I didn't anticipate. The plot was exciting and kept me on my toes. While the world and the magic are unique, those aspects aren't overwhelming or hard to follow for the reader. The characters, while not terribly fleshed out in this book, are relatable and compelling, especially Sandis. The ending of this book made me immediately want to pick up the next one in the series.
