This plot is crazy and makes no sense at all, still cannot look away, must continue.

I'm really not sure what to think about this Return business - it seems like the author is writing fanfiction, except she owns the characters. And I really can't think why you would start up the series again after 17 years, for anything other than money.

It's all quite bizarre, there's a slightly different tone to the books, and it feels as if LJ Smith is legit making it up as she goes along. I think the fact that I put this book down for a couple of weeks and had no motivation to pick it up says a lot about it. It's still entertaining, but it's just not the same. Totally bizarre.

Not gonna lie, I think that Elena coming back to life is a total copout. She's been human, dead, a vampire, dead, a spirit, a weird half spirit thing, human, and now a human who's making The Change. It really bothers me because when it comes down to it, she's really not a very special character, and it feels like a forced deux es machina so that the author has something to write about.

I also dislike that she's human and seemingly helpless at times, but then the author brings up this Wings of Purification (or Redemption, or whatever) bullshit, to instantly resolve the situation. Be clear - either Elena has powers, or she doesn't. Don't say that she has no powers, or that she's totally exhausted them, then have her randomly whip out this amazing showcase of power at the last minute, just to resolve the storyline.

When I forced myself to pick up this book it was entertaining, but overall I would just describe it as very sloppy. Bringing Elena back from the dead/in her numerous forms was very sloppy and a total copout, and the kitsune storyline had so much potential (I dont think I've ever come across such despicable fantasy characters), but it was just executed very poorly, especially toward the end when the author tried to resolve the conflict.

I'm going to force myself to read the next book, because I do want to know what happens to Stefan, because I have to finish books and series once I start, and because I remembered hating the first book in the series, but they did improve exponentially after that. Im hoping this one is just a bit of a dud, and that LJ Smith does a much better job of the next one.

I can't really say that I have high or low expectations for the next book - I want it to be better, but I just can't imagine it being very good. Damon will probably try to make more attempts to win Elena over, when we all know she'll end up with Stefan in the end, and I just can't comprehend a book without Bonnie or Meredith! But Im not going to can it before I've read it, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

this is probably my favorite volume so far, which is something i—of course—don't really know how to feel about. deciding i need to finish reading “the vampire diaries” at my big age of twenty–seven was probably not my brighest moment, because i am so not the right target for this. not anymore.
there are certain aspects of this series i really do not fuck with, i'm sorry. i find certain choices and characterizations way too cringe to be real—and now more than ever i thank the series for taking a different, simpler route with the plot.
i feel like l. j. smith has a too–much–gene, at times. and what i mean by this is... the whole story would have worked a hell of a lot more if it was about just vampires. the whole resurrection, now i'm a spirit, whoops no maybe an angel, back to humanity, oh why not sprout wings all of a sudden was quite frankly a bit ridiculous.
yet, there were many other things i really enjoyed. damon, for starters. now he is something i wish the tv series kept the same, because damn! i love seeing him interact with the group, especially bonnie...

this is the worst book of the vampire diaries series:(
seriously. the author's like, lost her track on the beauty of the series. the japanese kitsune of whatever they call it and the characters and fell's churchian culture just clash. it just doesn't go right. it's like the author's pushing it to hard in re-famounising the book after 15 years because the tv version is a hit.

but i'm still a fan. i love damon salvatore. he's got his own style and hot attitude... and the fact that he couldn't remember matt's name cracked me up!

shadow souls is much better and i'm looking forward to the last installment.

Jumping into this book, it seems to have more mature content compared to previous books which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for me personally.

There was a sweet spot in this that made me feel like I was watching a horror movie & I was enjoying it a lot. With every book I read I love Bonnie more & more! We got a lot more Damon pov compared to the previous books. There was also a lot of action & a little bit of a mystery to solve to keep you on your toes.

That being said there were parts of this book I found myself bored in. Not to mention some of the crazy, unbelievable storylines that were happening. There were some parts where I just wanted it to be over but there were also enjoyable parts too (for me at least)
