This is an absolute must-read for those who love learning about history’s supporting characters.

Great book! We learn about the personal and professional struggles of executioners, how society worked, crimes and corresponding punishments, and the personal history of Frantz Schmidt. I was worried this would be too gruesome, but I didn’t feel that way. I did learn about a new type of torture and execution - the wheel!
I wish that Schmidt’s journal held personal facts, but obviously there’s nothing that Harrington could do about that.
