This is a beautiful book. A little slow for me at times, but it is a very heartfelt story. Emira’s journey is one that so many of us go through in one way or another. The novel really explores how difficult it can be to choose yourself over others in your life, but how absolutely critical it can be as well. The characters in this novel feel so real, and each one is a complex network of flaws and positive traits alike.

If you’re one of those people who refuses to listen and believe Black people stories. Don’t read this book. You will hate it for all the right reasons.

That’s my review.

Such A Fun Age is a compellingly uncomfortable book, the final quarter had me wanting to read with my hands over my eyes as the dread that is so smartly built over the course of the novel comes to a head. All the characters were cleverly fleshed out and motivations were clearly drawn, I found myself empathising with troublesome characters more than once, even when I wanted to shout at them. Powerful points are subtly made and there were no easy answers on offer as Emira navigated her way through the course of the novel.

Timely and well written with a great sense of voice. I got an intense and intimate impression of all the characters and the sense of place.
