I really tried to finish this book but I was bored by it.
DNF but made it near to the end.

Didn’t dislike, but found myself disappointed; from the description, I expected a lot more from the book. I found myself uninvolved, and impatient to finish the book and move on.

Has ties to folklore, so the stream of consciousness motif is tethered. Incredibly twisted, unsettling, claustrophobic, etc. Does tend to double back on itself, to its detriment.

I would classify Laird Hunt's In the House in the Dark of the Woods less as horror and more as a dark fairy tale. It's a subtle enough distinction sometimes, but this is a case where it feels worth making.

With the vivid imagery and surreal ambiguity of a dream, this short novel tells the story of a woman seemingly lost in a dark forest--as many such tales begin. Amidst the trees, she encounters others--women, a girl, a man--each of whom has secrets they are not inclined to tell.

The story unfolds in eerie fashion, always with the sense of something more lurking just out of sight. The woman repeats her desire to return home, but as her efforts to do so continue, she begins to discover the magic and secrets at work in the dark of the woods--powers that she becomes aware of, but does not fully understand.

Blending past and present, the real and the fantastic, the beautiful and the horrifying--In the House in the Dark of the Woods is a story of regret and punishment, of escape and freedom, of hope and fear. It invites the reader in to unravel the hidden secrets of its world, telling a story that is strange and familiar in equal measure.
