I don't plan on writing a memoir but I really liked this book. I enjoy reading memoirs so understanding how much work, introspection, and technique goes into creating one was very interesting and humbling. Also, in general, the book includes a lot of writing tips that can be applied to other types of works.
Author was also very funny.

Moderate: Alcoholism, Child abuse, Mental illness, and Physical abuse
Minor: Cursing and Sexual content
Generally lots of mentioned triggers bc the book mentions writing about trauma so there are some personal examples and published examples of these stories. Not very descriptive but frequent.earthtokb's review

this definitely is a great text for folks looking to learn more about the history of the memoir genre in a text that doesn’t read like a textbook. enjoyed the writer’s inclusion of their own journey writing memoirs as well as taking notes from ones that exist across multiple centuries.
the only thing that made me ick was use of the word ghetto in the intro (hate this word coming from anyone not black tbh) and also advice for folk not under 35/folk who are “too young” to reconsider writing a memoir (some of us are #traumatized, unfortunately, & I’m anti-rhetoric that suggests age = wisdom).
