Yes yes, I know, I’m years late to this (book) party. I finally read Gone Girl and it did not disappoint. I was worried as the first 100 pages dragged a bit, but it really picked up and I was reading 100+ pages a day. This story tracks a marriage that dissolved through a lack of communication on both sides, to eventually leaving two people so out of the loop with each other, that they both resorted to extremes. This book had lots of twists and turns of: Did he do it? Is he lying? What’s this new discovery about? Who’s telling the truth? It kept you guessing to the very last page. I felt a little unsatisfied with how it ended, but if two people are both as toxic as the other, sometimes they deserve each other. I am so looking forward to watching the movie now. All I could think about while reading the book is how each chapter or scene would be replicated in a movie.

The story is decent but I was disappointed by the ending. There's not as much mystery as what I had expected and it felt a little lackluster.

I liked the pace and the slow reveal of this one. Another disturbing read that I can't say I "liked" it but did it's job of keeping my attention.

I could honestly give this book 1 star or 5 stars depending on criteria.

The good - Gillian Flynn can write! She creates characters that come to life, she made me want to keep turning the pages quickly, she throws in most twists than any other 10 authors.

The bad - I did not like spending time with these characters. I hated every single person in this book. Most were just evil, vile, loathsome creatures and those that weren't (Nick's sister, Amy's parents) were so aggravating and complacent (how could you sit back and watch this stuff happening and not do anything!?) I wanted to scream at them.

This is one of those books that will stay with me my entire life - there is not a chance in hell that I will ever forget this book or the characters in the book (and I'm not sure that's a good or a bad thing).

Would I recommend this book? I don't know. It would depend on the reader, it's not for everyone.

I'm going to settle on 4 stars just based on the following criteria - I couldn't get the book out of my head, when I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it, I was counting the time until I could read it again. But let me say again that I hated these people and I'm glad I don't have to spend another minute in their heads.

This book left me feeling so empty and uncomfortable. I'm not sure if it was because I felt sympathy for Nick or because the novel did t end on a completed note. I was so impressed with the writing and the way Gillian could actually take you inside the mind of a sociopath. Overall it was am entertaining read that has haunted me since I finished it.
