I like the characters, I like the world, and I love reading stories like this one and ACOTAR, that are led by some very basass women! I can’t wait to dive deeper into it all!

Sword of Glass' main character suffers from a mild case of not-like-other-girls syndrome. All the characters are a little bland and wooden and predictable. There are too many named characters who don't matter at all and die with little payoff. The plot is a bit meandering with several slow spots (including, curiously, the last several chapters). I just didn't really feel anything while I was reading, but I was reasonably entertained.

There is poison! Both a theoretical poisoning (a controlled environment, but still theoretically very dangerous) and a second scene with a purposeful poisoning with an agent that can cause death. There are also hallucinations (which end up to be technically real) caused by the poisoning.heathersinkwell's review against another edition

Also, keep in mind this is a YA book, not an adult fantasy book. It's comparable to GoT but it's not GoT (which is adult fantasy). There is a decent amount of telling, not showing. Again, I expect that in a YA book.
People complain about Celaena being whiney or "not assassin-like."
So, despite the hype, I tempered my expectations and enjoyed the book for what it is. I'm excited to read the rest of the series!

This book as Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire & Assassin's Blade are all Young Adult... The rest isn't... The series is beyond worth being read book to book without a breakmpereira's review against another edition

a complaint i have has to be that the writing felt very 2012, especially because of the damn exclamation points, but it wasn't unbearable and i know it’ll get better.
