Starting this series after finishing ACOTAR, I was expecting a very similiar world. And though I can see the similarities, it is very different. Best way to describe it is that TOG is a dystopian version of the world in ACOTAR. & so far, I am here for it.
I like the characters, I like the world, and I love reading stories like this one and ACOTAR, that are led by some very basass women! I can’t wait to dive deeper into it all!

A decidedly mid-tier fantasy book that reads like a mix between Hunger Games and ACOTAR. I like Hunger Games, but bailed on ACOTAR after two books. I think if you liked both series, you'll like this a lot. If you liked neither, definitely don't bother.

Sword of Glass' main character suffers from a mild case of not-like-other-girls syndrome. All the characters are a little bland and wooden and predictable. There are too many named characters who don't matter at all and die with little payoff. The plot is a bit meandering with several slow spots (including, curiously, the last several chapters). I just didn't really feel anything while I was reading, but I was reasonably entertained.

Great story, classic Sarah J Maas combination of court intrigue, romance, magic, and combat. Almost gave it 4.5 but then subtracted a quarter star because of all of the anti-corset bits that really rubbed me the wrong way. I listened to a solid 3 hours of the audiobook while wearing a corset, and I can tell you for dang sure my ribs were not being crushed!

This book was super enjoyable. It was mysterious and had excellent character development. I read this as the first book of SEVEN. I'm not expecting it to move quickly or be wildly engaging right off the bat. I'm expecting it to lay the foundation.

Also, keep in mind this is a YA book, not an adult fantasy book. It's comparable to GoT but it's not GoT (which is adult fantasy). There is a decent amount of telling, not showing. Again, I expect that in a YA book.

People complain about Celaena being whiney or "not assassin-like."
She acts like a CLASSIC 18-19-year-old girl. She didn't WANT to be an assassin. She STILL doesn't want to be an assassin. She had no choice and then was surprised with her training bill. She explicitly states this - she wanted to be a healer, but then her family was slaughtered and Arobynn found her frozen in a river. She wants legit freedom and being the best assassin was her only way out. Of course, she's going to act like a normal 18-19-year-old and choose to behave like an atypical assassin. She never wanted it in the first place and still doesn't want it.

So, despite the hype, I tempered my expectations and enjoyed the book for what it is. I'm excited to read the rest of the series!

Tropes:
-enemies to lovers
-love triangle
-chosen one
-banned magic
-good vs evil
-reluctant hero
-orphan hero

I will never not be grateful for what Celaena did for me... That character brought me back from the lowest, we dug deeper together before we rose from the ashes we're still shaking off but I'm in love. I'm in love with how this fictional world became more wonderful to me than that of LOTR or GOT... personal opinion but there's such greatness behind those words. Many people would try to shut this book down but there's more of those that actually give the young assassin with a shattered heart a chance... To thread the darkness together until you find your light

I just found it odd how unaware an assassin was? There was a killer out there and she let people slip in and out of her room without notice

i actually enjoyed this so much more than i expected, i really liked the characters and this world has a lot to mystery especially surrounding the magic so i can’t wait to read more of that!

a complaint i have has to be that the writing felt very 2012, especially because of the damn exclamation points, but it wasn't unbearable and i know it’ll get better.
