4.5* rounded up. this was so good?? i know crime and punishment is referred to as one of the greatest pieces of russian literature (and indeed, global literature) of all time, but still. you never really know with the classics whether they're going to be too opaque, too long, too slow. but that was far from the case here, and i had an incredible time sinking my teeth into crime and punishment.

Given how universally loved I was not ready for how conservative Christian this book is. This book is fascinating in how it portrays a very real very harsh reality in it as a part of it's moral dilemmas, but the solutions Dostoyevsky proposes are just meaningless in a way. I will say I spent a lot of time thinking about this book and also feeling crazy bc of it's acclaimed status and just not jiving with it, so in terms of making me think, it did a good job. I'm just too much of a commie and with a strong belief in moral relativism

The downward spiral of a poor student was relatable.  I enjoyed my time (mostly).

Trauma. På riktigt.

Although it was quite complex and multilayered I felt that it could've been shorter. Since it was incredibly long it was not as impactful as I hoped. Also I thought that the ending was just weird. After so much darkness and hopelessness
all is resolved with the power of love? What was that? Also the misogyny was quite awful especially during the part before the confession scene
