Some of the selected writers I've read before, some I'd sadly never heard of. The excerpts included in this brief anthology are good enough to stand alone, most notably the Lawrence Hill and Eden Robinson pieces. The critical essays provide, I think, interesting reading for academics without being beyond the reach of those of us who didn't bother to take University English. I think this is a great introduction to diverse Canadian literature. It has definitely inspired me to read more and to read more intently.
