It’s really difficult to write a story like this. This is America and this is his life. I was really emotional throughout this entire book because it was incredibly touching and difficult to see what he had gone through. It was also incredibly important to see that he is representative of a larger group of people. He is a truly gifted writer too and I found myself crying a few times which has not happened in a book in a while.  This book definitely lives up to the hype and everyone should read it.

Heavy is a powerful memoir of Kiese Laymon's life thus far. It's a hopeful and devastating, heart wrenching and heartwarming account of being a Black child, and then a Black man in America. Laymon writes in a modern stream of consciousness style, but what's really incredible is how he can still weave cohesive themes throughout his story. Heavy was one of the best memoirs I've read.

(Audiobook) “Heavy” has so many meanings in this book. Kiese had the heavy burden of growing up a Black boy/man in the deep south. He dealt with the heaviness of abuse in many forms. Among other things, he was heavy physically and struggled with an eating disorder. Kiese endured a lot but there is beauty in the heaviness he survived.
