A continuation of the story begun in Sailing to Sarantium, Lord of Emperors is rife with potential that it wildly fails to execute. Despite the narrative informing us at multiple turns that the women are so obviously in charge/involved, it's rarely if ever shown but instead gestured to as a past-tense item. Religion, despite being everywhere and clearly incredibly important, is merely a set-dressing -- when it was very much more than that in the first book. These things, added to the unnecessary explicit sex scene(s?) and the fact that Kay's prose just isn't lovely enough to sit with at the pace he writes, created an altogether disappointing read.
Graphic: Sexual content and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Sexual assault, Suicide, and Sexual harassment
