I am not a fan of horror, gore, or depressing subjects, but Flynn is simply a masterful writer. I would only recommend this book to those interested in reading new and well-executed literary techniques. Flynn's speciality is drawing the reader into a completely unsympathetic protagonist. I've now read her first 3 novels, and hated every one of her main characters. Her plots, twists, and descriptions are unparalleled by any contemporary writer I've come across. Her Kansas City and Missouri nods don't hurt, either.

I read this book for bookclub, so I should state that right at the outset this type of book isn't the type of book I usually read. I typically don't find myself going for the drama/crime books because I feel that reading is a way to escape for me, so I don't want to read about stuff that happens in real life, unless that's romance/comedy/family drama/finding yourself drama type stuff.

That said, this book is very well written, I feel. So well written, in fact, that due to it being in first person, I often felt myself so drawn into this world, the main character's head that I felt uncomfortable. I didn't really LIKE any of the characters in the book, mostly because they all had problems that in reading fiction, I don't necessarily want to be a part of.

But, the writing was well done, the mystery compelling and engaging.

If you like that type of book, this one's for you.

Only read if horror indulgence is your thing. Kept waiting for a redemptive quality, but it was a train wreck of morally-terrible, unlikeable characters. Don’t waste your time.
