I’d had this book on my shelf since my birthday two summers ago. Part of me feels guilty for waiting so long to read it, but a bigger part of me knows I have to be in the right headspace for dystopian lit or it will drag me right down to Bummersville. Ory and Max live in a world stricken by a strange phenomenon--victims lose their shadows, and then they lose their memories. When Max loses her shadow, their careful existence collapses around them. This book has the feel of a quest, with a long, perilous journey and no guarantee of success at the end of the road, but it’s also a testament to love and an exploration of its limits. And I’m still thinking about that ending.

This hurt.

None of it was how I expected, especially the end. This book made me think a LOT--how would I react if this was my world this happened to? What would I do if my boyfriend lost his shadow? What would we think and do, how would we survive? It also made me reflect on how much memory serves to form who we are, at our core.

The way these characters lost those they loved really hurt me too. Finding out who the Red King was had me gasp out loud. The ending, too--I see why Shepherd did it. And everything about The One Who Gathers was so fascinating.

To sum it all up, everything hurts but I'm happy I read it. This was honestly a really good and interesting read although a little long. 4/5 stars!

Stayed with me for days. Often slow going but asks beautiful and gut wrenching questions.

At times I did not like this book and at times (less often) I enjoyed the book. So I give credit to the author for evoking strong feelings. I found the story too far out there and creepy for my personal tastes. But a creative and interesting concept. I also would've preferred a different ending. Just another creative choice and difference of opinions though
