What are all of the things that make summer, summer? Is it the color of the trees or the beach? Is it the songs in the air from the people and the air conditioners and other seasonal things? Is it the fireflies flitting through the air? It turns out it's all of those things, and more. Henkes' lyrical text is complimented by and plays well against Dronzek's artwork showing vignettes from the season.

The final book in Henkes's seasonal quartet is just as lushly illustrated and poetic as the rest. Picturing a suburban summer complete with green lawns, trips to the beach, and firefly nights, this book is a celebration of the seasons.

A picture book so meh I had to go through my Mock Awards shelf twice to find it, because somehow I just... missed it. The illustrations are cute, but stylistically very mediocre. The text is acceptable. If I needed a summer read aloud and all my other better choices were checked out, I'd read this. Or if I needed something unobjectionably bland. Meh.

A sweet idea, but not much substance.

The Summer conclusion in this collaboration with Laura Dronzek. Companion books include, "When Spring Comes", "In the Middle of Fall", and "Winter is Here."

"If I had to pick one color,
I'd say Summer is green.
Green on green on green.
Summer is a green song."

Author Kevin Henkes walks us through all the sounds of summer---grass in the wind, sprinklers, birds, lawn mowers---and all the colors of summer---yellow summer sun, gray fog, blue beach---and returns to the idea that started him out...summer is a green song. And then he eases it out and as it changes, changes, into fall.
