Reviews with content warning for Medical content - Jurassic Park

The OG! I really enjoyed this book, perhaps even more so than the movie. The characters are great and even with some idea of what would happen and who would survive, I was still enthralled. I loved the cold opening and how all the pieces came together to show that a dinosaur was out and about attacking kids. I appreciated that the dinosaurs act like actual animals and not movie monsters like they have in some of the latest of this franchises movie entries (wasn’t Jurassic World just awful? Not even a cute kid and cool-looking dinos could save that flick). I was so interested in the idea that Timmy is the older one in the book. Hammond is also much more despicable here, but it really ramps up in his final perspective chapter; though

his death felt very contrived, I won’t say it bothered me much. Lex and Tim in the movie was clearly just Tim split in half, which was wise since Lex in the novel would annoy moviegoers. The movie lawyer is clearly Ed Regis without much Gennaro at all. Shame we didn’t get baby Rexy in the film or the velociraptor nest or the deal with the juvenile velociraptors on the ship. There’s a lot that was lost. The hunter survives, Malcolm dies, the lawyer lives, and there’s a lot of interesting dynamics between the characters.

It's a pretty scary book. I only reread this because I barely remembered the plot and it scared the shit out of 10-year-old me. It still scared me now but I didn't cry so that's a win.

If you're looking for something with a thorough buildup followed by a steep descent into madness, then this book is 10 billon percent for you.

However, my major gripe with the book is how the author wrote the female characters.

Lex was incredibly annoying

but what annoyed me the most was how

Ellie was sexualised and sorta... overlooked? By other men.

Anyways I found most of

the character deaths

to be well-deserved so yay.

in some aspects, I prefer the movies to the book - especially in terms of the characters. they had more personality in the films. ellie sattler was written in a misogynistic manner and I appreciate how laura dern brought some life into the character. (and I also like how present she was in the movie. she was not entirely important in the text). after reading this, I can only assume crichton is a little misogynistic - it seems like the 2 female characters were throwaways compared to the endless men who had much more to offer other than their long, tanned legs, cutoff shorts, and tiny, delicate, womanly hands.

I loved the story. the writing was very plain yet engaging at the same time - I wasn’t quite bored of the language because the story itself was so compelling I just kept turning page after page without any problem. for the most part, I prefer the story in the book (excluding the lost world - I haven’t read that yet) to that in the film. I do think that the film is an excellent adaptation despite the discrepancies.

ian malcom genuinely seemed like a self-insert at times. his final speech at the end of the book about how the earth will be fine in spite of humanity (which I agree with - life will always find a way and even though some humans act in a parasitic manner, the earth will thrive, with or without us. we may mess with our own future, but long after we are gone, the earth will rebuild herself and be okay.) seemed to reveal personal bias from crichton. I agreed with practically everything up until ian malcom said we simply shouldn’t care about the environment because at the end of the day, the earth will prevail….I think it’s a bit of a twisted view considering what happened in the book …not to mention my personal gripes with that statement (although I believe the earth will be fine in spite of us, we should still nurture her as the temporary caretakers). idk, it just makes me wonder what crichton felt about that particular situation. that statement felt so weird.

One of the few books where I’d actually say the movie is better. While I really enjoyed reading this, it was a bit slow and meandering for me. But other than that it was great! The characters are realistic, the plot is engaging and fun, and the message is loud and clear.
