Interesting portrayal of queer sex workers in the 60s. However, the story felt repetitive and I did not enjoyed the writing or plot structure.

it's a book from the 60s so the language is bit yikes. the book also isn't very fond of femininity.

It's responsible for the entire counter culture movement in America. City of Night is dazzling; never have I read 400 pages so quickly.

reminds me a lot of the things they carried by tim o'brien. it's a very long read, but if you like the winding kind of story i think its worth it.

But it doesn’t have to be like that. No rockets. Just the absence of loneliness. That’s love enough.

John Rechy has one of the most beautiful and unique writing styles that I've ever encountered and that acutely supports the story, absorbing the reader into the protagonist's world rendered through a blend of epic journey and quiet introspection. To quote the author himself, the feelings I have for this book can be summarized as :) .
Reading City of Night while listening to Lou Reed and David Bowie is a whole experience and one that I've found extremely rewarding and revealing in many ways. Not only a snapshot of the 60s underground-scene, but also a timeless look at a consciousness in conflict with itself, this is definitely a backbone of 20st century American literature.
