The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly – Sun-mi Hwang a quirky little book all about a hen who wants to hatch an egg. Sprout lives in the hen coop and every day her eggs are collected by the farmers wife and taken away, but Sprout dreams of more she want to hatch an egg. At first she stops laying eggs and the farmers wife sends her to be dispatched where she finds herself in a hole, and a mallard duck telling her to get a move on and get out before the weasel gets her. Sprout then struggles to find a place for herself, the farmyard animals don’t want her in the barn, and she can’t go with the ducks, but she is aware of the weasel still looking for it’s dinner. One day on hearing a loud squawking noise she looks in the thicket and finds an egg and it is still warm so she sit on it, just to keep it warm until it’s mother comes back. This is a story about not giving up on your dreams no matter how difficult it might be, it is about not giving up and it is about love.

This book is so much more than being just about a hen who wanted more

It's a very quick and simple read but I find the story to be relatively moving and the illustrations add to the experience

This story has a nickname in English -- The Korean Charlotte's Web. I think it is a good to make parallels between the stories. Both involve a sense of longing to belong, love, loss, an adopted family, and self sacrifice. I teared up at the end, for sure. This edition has beautiful minimalistic illustrations at the start of each chapter.
