I have watched the movie adaptation of this book for years and have only just realised it’s based on a book!

I banned myself from watching the movie this year until I read the book… but that’s honestly not needed because they are vastly different.

Unlike the movie, Sally and her daughters move away from the aunts (who have a very small role in the book). Her daughters are teenagers and are much bigger parts of the story. Even the circumstances surrounding Jimmy are different as Gillian brings him to Sally instead.

Overall, I did enjoy the book (and have ordered the next ones from my local library), but I do think this is one where the movie may be better than the book.

I love watching this movie over and over so I figured it was about time to read the source and the two are different enough that I'm at a bit of a crossroads here but I found this to be a solid read.

For one, I like that the Sally's girls are teens in the book vs kids in the film since it lead a different aspect to the story and showcased Sally in a bit of a vulnerable light aside from being a widow, but a single mom on the verge of losing her girls if she's not careful.

Another is that very little magic happens. Lots of hints of magical things but it's just the I fluence of it and not the actual doing which I miss. It's such a visual in the film that I kept waiting for something that never came.

The additional small snippets of the aunts was a welcoming new fact for me since the film didn't give too much insight but here, there were little morsels throughout about their younger selves, the family, and Maria Owens that I'm sure get talked about in the other books.

All in all, the book and it's characters are so different from their movie counterparts, especially the relationships all the women have towards each other, Sally's daughters included, that I find I can enjoy them as separate pieces.

I liked the first half I guess the second one not as much and the last quarter not much at all. I don't think I've read a book before that used the F word so many times.

So I wanted to read this book before ever watching the movie. I always heard the movie was a classic, so I figured the book is too. Honestly, it took me way too long to figure out if I was even reading the first/right book or not. My opinion, the aunts are the only like-able characters in the whole book and I find they’re not in it enough. If you came for a cute witchy book, you’ve come to the wrong place. The only time there is any “witchy” elements in the book is when the aunts are around which isn’t often. They had too many side characters that they would insert their thoughts in, but didn’t really build those characters. Over half of the side characters I did not care about. Honestly, I would have much rather listen to Sally and her husbands love story which we barely got any of. To me that was the only love story in the book, the others were all rushed and felt forced. Not to mention literally every sexual scene feeling uncomfortable and on the verge of not consent. I kept reading this book waiting for it to get good and don’t get me wrong there were cute moments. Maybe I just had too high expectations going into it, but I don’t know. I’d say for 75% of the book I was just waiting for it to be over. I will say the narrator I liked. She sounded like Cher and I lowkey loved that.

absolutely beautiful 🥺 the prose in this is stunning, the characters vivid and enchanting. i love love love multi-generational stories and how we could see sally & gillian grow up and find their places in the world. have a soft spot for the aunts as well <3 this gives major winx club vibes as really, all the boys are just here to be boyfriends and nothing else
