Holidays are meant to be a relaxing thing to help you unwind from the stresses of your everyday life. But when something horrific happens while you're on holiday, it might just haunt you as you go home, as it does in Mark Edwards' Follow You Home.

In a last hurrah before finally settling down into married and family life, Daniel and Laura go on a tour throughout Europe. While on a late night train in Romania, Daniel and Laura take a rest in a sleeper car, that they didn't have a ticket for, and upon waking in response to the border guards, find that their passports and tickets have been stolen from them. Thrown off the train at the next stop, Daniel and Laura walk along the tracks to the nearest town, but instead find an abandoned looking house in the woods. After entering the house, they are frightened for their lives and quickly run as far away as they can. Once back in England, their lives are haunted by what they experienced in that house, both mentally and physically as people around them who have learned of their ordeal begin to die mysteriously.

The narrative had an exciting start, but then the story just dragged on. I just wanted to get to what happened, but it kept getting unnecessarily delayed as the slow reveal of what actually took place in that remote house came to light. While I can appreciate a story that has multiple twists to keep you guessing as a proper psychological thriller should, this story had a few too many twists that are not well developed, as if Edwards couldn't decide which facet to the story was more interesting, so decided: have them all!

Good and creepy!

There are parts of this book that actually gave me nightmares and will stick with me for awhile! The writing was fantastic - definitely a page-turner. Loved it!

This wasn't Mark Edwards' best. I really liked the premise but the pacing and tension fell flat for me.

This book should've been longer for him to tell it more effectively. We didn't get enough time in Romania in my opinion; there are multiple threads there concerning the train and the forest, but we were rushed out of Romania and the threads and clues didn't get time to properly take root.

The London part had a lot going on but not all of it landed. Edwards could've focused less on
SpoilerLaura seeing ghosts and hallucinations
and done more gaslighting and things going missing instead. We spent a disproportionate amount of time having to endure the dumbass male protag's thoughts about ~*how many women he pulls for being a skinny geek*~ and bumbling his way through the mystery. This time could've been spent wondering who was fucking with them and establishing multiple suspects.

Meh. An enjoyable enough audiobook but nothing memorable.

Holy Christ...

What I thought was going to be a horror book turned out to be one of the best thrillers I've read in a while. Edwards takes you on quite a journey, literally and figuratively. Between trying to figure out what happened in Romania, and what's happening in present-time London, your mind is twisted until the very end. And even the epilogue drops one HELL of a bombshell. Definitely suggest this one!

  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

I did enjoy this book and found Daniel a likeable enough character.Laura I found a bit irritating, at least Daniel was trying to get help whereas she just moped about over it.
Spoiler although the reason for this becomes apparent at the end
I also enjoyed the suspense element that something dreadful had happened in Romania and the thrill of them being followed/watched. But, I kind of felt a bit let down by the big reveal, I didn't see why this wasn't something they could have informed the police about.

Overall it was an enjoyable read and I read it in just a couple of days which is a record for me lately.

I could not put this book down. The only disappointment was how it ended as I wanted to know what happened next!

I enjoyed the complexity of the book and the way it kept you guessing throughout but I found the storyline far too far fetched and really unbelievable, I'd give it 3.5 stars
