I just could really connect with any of the characters or what was happening. Every plotline was merging together and I just couldn't care about anything.

Amazing! What a great follow-up to a series. I think I actually enjoyed book two more than the first one (and I really enjoyed [b:The Shadow of What Was Lost|22878967|The Shadow of What Was Lost (The Licanius Trilogy, #1)|James Islington|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1507308087l/22878967._SY75_.jpg|42428433]).

It's hard to give this book a review without spoilers (and I hate to give any kind of spoilers). But what I will say is that all of the main characters from book one are still great. Some of the lesser characters were a little...annoying? Although I understand the purpose that they served.

Still, this book was mostly non-stop action. There were a few minor spots that dragged a little, but they still fit into the overall narrative and did serve to advance the plot.

Overall my biggest "complaint" with this book is just the map in the beginning. There are WAY too many missing locations from the map that are important to the series. Also, there are a lot of locations on the map that (at least so far) are irrelevant to the story.

So yeah, just a better map and this book would basically be flawless. I'm really looking forward to book three, although after that epilogue....oof. It's gonna be a tough one.

I would say this book was a 4 or 4.5, really close to a 5 but I just felt in the dark for a bit longer than I’d like. I did enjoy it more than the first book because I didn’t have to deal with as much world-building/explaining. It was like I was being blue-balled for far too long, BUT the reveal was splendid. Seeing how everything from book one interconnected with this was so satisfying. That epilogue was just AMAZING. I’m so excited to read the third and final book.

EDIT: I know I just finished today, but I had to comment on this quote: “The lesser of two evils, or the greater good. Get a good man to utter either of those phrases, and there is no one more eager to begin perpetrating evil.”

It just… gives me chills. Loved it so much, I needed to add it to my review so when I look back I can remember.

I have to say after a 700 page book I am still ready for more. The build up to the great epilogue made this a five star book. It was fantastic. I love the themes in this book like the greater good at the cost of humanity and love. For those that have not read this series, I strongly recommend it to readers of epic fantasy. And with the trilogy completed, you do not have to wait years to complete the trilogy. On to the final book.
