Not very much to say about this novel. I was interested once I started hearing the killers POV but I was a little disappointed at the ending. I was expecting idk a little more..UHMPFFFF to this. I wanted more shock value. I would have been happier if the entire thing was written back and forth between the killer and Rex’s views. Rex was honestly kind of boring. The addition to his new beau was also meh.

Ik vond het plot interresant en de executive was ook heel goed. Ik was een beetje verward toen het opeens over een andere persoon ging, maar toen ik het eenmaal begreep kon Ik niet stoppen met lezen.

Het is een goede thriller en ik was verbaasd met het einde.

Het gouden ei werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1984. Zelf heb ik dit boekje voor het eerst gekocht en gelezen in 1988. Mogelijks stond het nog net op een leeslijst van de middelbare school, maar ik heb nadien nog een paar keer herlezen --en dat gebeurt me uiterst zelden. Het werd maar liefst tweemaal verfilmd, eerst als Spoorloos door George Sluizer, in 1988, met in mijn herinnering uitstekende vertolkingen van Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu en een jonge Gene Bervoets en Johanna ter Steege. Vervolgens mocht Sluizer in 1993 een remake maken voor het Amerikaanse publiek, The Vanishing, met niemand minder dan Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland en Sandra Bullock. Het is al lang geleden dat nog eens een van beide films heb gezien.

Het was ook lang geleden dat ik de korte roman nog eens had gelezen, waarschijnlijk meer dan vijftien jaar, maar vermoedelijk al veel langer. Tweeënveertig jaar na datum blijft dit boek echter nog helemaal overeind. Noem het gerust een klassieker. Aanrader dus.

Special book because of the different perspectives from which the story is told and the sequence. Too bad it's so short. At the same time, it also leaves room for your own imagination. It is somewhat dated; with smartphones and other modern technology and entertainment, the story would be different.

 "Het Gouden Ei" is een teleurstellende leeservaring geweest. De dialogen tussen de personages waren droog en saai, wat het boek moeilijk verteerbaar maakte. Bovendien was er een onnodige aanwezigheid van seksisme en racisme, wat afbreuk deed aan de kwaliteit van het verhaal. Daarnaast waren er opvallend veel spelfouten in het boek, wat de algehele leeservaring verder verminderde.

On the thriller shelve it goes. Reluctantly though. It belongs there, but I wouldn't recommend it as such. That seems to raise expectations the novella doesn't (want to) meet. A crime drama is perhaps a better description. One with themes as its main fuel. Both men are driven by ignorance. Obsessively. Rex Hofman desperately wants to know what happened to his girlfriend who suddenly disappeared, the kidnapper wants to figure out if he's capable and is very determined in finding out. I preferred Raymond Lemorne's side of the story.

Tim Krabbé's distant, almost methodical writing style suits this character better. A cold and calculated man with a simple motive and a more or less random way of picking targets. I find that a hell of a lot scarier than all those vile serial killers that murder in the most creative ways. This guy is real. He could be out there. A terrifying thought. Just as it is terrifying when he contacts Rex 8 years after the fact. How things turn out is no real surprise, there are clues, but it doesn't make the ending less powerful. In the end, both men know.
