This was an interesting read. Not necessarily my usual fair, and at times was challenging to stay engaged in the writing style, but I am glad I stuck with it. It's a good exploration of Chinese immigrants in America in the 1940s-1950s.

This was an easy read, however, it felt like I was being told a story rather than feel a story. I really didn't connect with any of the characters. I disagreed with their view of a "typical American." I read this as part of a series on immigrants and touching on their experiences in the States. Much of the time I thought why did he or she do this. Maybe I had a high expectation. Maybe it was a cultural difference. Just didn't connect.

I heard this author's name somewhere, so when I saw it on the shelf, I thought, "Oh. Right. I have heard of this person, which means they must be good." This is the story of a Chinese immigrant who comes to America and can't really find his place, deals with trying to assimilate into a new culture, and interacts with some unusual characters. I think I expected more from this book than I got; I never quite felt like I had any traction with the main character or liked him very much.
